Echoing the sentiments of a commenter somewhere before me, I also created a DW account specifically to come here and yell with other people about the black hole that is Guardian. I should also probably mention that rageprufrock's fic Sarva was the siren song that pulled me into this fandom, and that she is definitely to blame for how 80% of my thoughts are now constantly preoccupied by our resident pretty boy, Zhu Yilong. Though I see that I was hardly her only victim.
I tried to recall my own initial reaction to Ep1 in homage to this review but all I remember is this:
- THAT LOOK on Shen Wei's face when he first looks up and sees Zhao Yunlan's face after like ten millennia of waiting. We all know the one. I think it was that look alone that cut through my prior fog of cynicism (which, suffering through 1. the ridiculous intro 2. Guo Changcheng as a character, especially since I thought he was going to be the protagonist 3. unfortunate special effects a la the members of the SID, I THINK I WAS JUSTIFIED IN HAVING) and doomed me to 39 more episodes of increasingly bizzare plot and awful CGI.
- I do remember a small sarcastic part of me making Romeo-and-Juliet balcony scene parallels. ANYONE ELSE.
- THE HANDSHAKE SCENE.
- Shen Wei brushing his fingers longingly over Zhao Yunlan's picture while reading his personnel form. I mean in any other movie this would be a classic villain move. Here it was just. Gay
- When time stopped and the sky literally clouded over to reveal Shen Wei in his Black Cloaked Envoy getup I.... paused my video and said, aloud, 'what the fuck'. Because really, what the hell is that, my dudes.
On a side note, most of my morning was spent trying not to laugh out loud at work as I read these two posts, so thank you for creating this community! I've been content to be a serial lurker in most fandoms but Guardian as a fandom is still pretty small and I am thirsty for more quality content and discussion so this community really is a godsend. Looking forward to the episodes ahead!
I also created an account just for this
