I actually even find him more annoying in the novel - at least at the beginning. It is mentioned several times that he can do nothing right, that if it weren't for his aunts' care he wouldn't even be where he is, he almost failed his education, etc etc. We don't know these things about him in the show, so that at least leaves room for empathy.
He might get more respectable over time, but he starts out so very low.
(I usually can only get through the scenes with him and Chu by chanting "moronsexual" under my breath. so tedious.)
